Scaling and polishing
Why Should I Scale And Polish My Teeth
Dental plaque and calculus, which build up around teeth and behind the gums, are home to harmful bacteria that can lead to gum disease and tooth damage. Even while plaque can be eliminated with good brushing and flossing, some plaque will always remain and eventually solidify into calculus, which can only be eliminated with expert dental cleaning.
Plaque, calculus, and stains may be removed with a simple scaling and polishing procedure to bring back your smile's brightness. Additionally, this procedure enables us to more thoroughly inspect your teeth for any additional minor issues that could require our attention, including as fractures or leaking fillings. This simple and mild technique will only take a few minutes if performed on a regular basis as advised, but it will have the most impact on maintaining your oral health.
The Process of Scaling and Polishing
The dentist will assess your oral health during the standard dental appointment before scaling and polishing your teeth.
Using an ultrasonic cleaning tool, scaling is the process of eliminating tartar and plaque from the gum line and around the teeth. Bacteria that can cause decay and gum disease will be present in plaque and tartar if they are allowed to build up.
In certain cases, removing tartar that is adhered to the root surfaces of gum infected teeth requires deeper cleaning using hand tools. By doing this, you may get rid of the germs that reside in the gum pockets and promote gum healing. We call this process Root-Planing. In these cases, a suitable local anesthetic will be administered before cleaning to provide optimal comfort.
We polish the teeth to get rid of exterior stains and smooth up their surfaces once scaling is finished. For more stubborn stains, we might use an air-powder spray or a spinning brush loaded with cleaning paste. As a consequence, your teeth will be shiny, clean, and easy to manage at home.
